Overview
Geography and cities
Liguria is a strip of land over 300 km long and a few kilometres wide, squeezed between the sea and the mountains: the Ligurian Alps to the west, the Apennines to the east. Genoa, in the middle, is the main city and one of the great Mediterranean ports; La Spezia (port, naval arsenal) and Savona (port, Vado Ligure) are the industrial provincial capitals, Imperia and Sanremo the towns of the Riviera dei Fiori. The hinterland is hilly and depopulated; almost everyone lives on the coast.
Economy
The economy revolves around the ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado (one of Italy's main port systems for containers) and La Spezia, logistics, shipbuilding (Sestri Ponente, Riva Trigoso, Muggiano), high tech and research (Erzelli, IIT), flower growing in the Albenga plain and around Sanremo, fishing and beach and cruise tourism. Income per head is average for the North, but growth is slow and the population is falling.
Who moves here and languages
Liguria has the highest average age in Italy: many northern retirees move to the Riviera for the climate. Workers come for the port, logistics, shipyards, health care and seasonal tourism; Genoa has a medium-sized public university. Ordinary-statute region, official language Italian; Genoese and the Ligurian dialects have no national protection, while in the upper Imperia valleys the Occitan minority (Brigasque) is recognised.
