The real market
Supply is ample and the market is slack compared with other large cities: finding a flat is relatively quick, but quality varies widely, and lift, damp and the condition of the buildings, often late nineteenth century, should be checked. Short-term rentals concentrate in the old town and Boccadasse. Gradients matter: the same street may have a bus stop at the bottom and fifty metres of steps up to the front door. Contracts are the national ones; agreed-rent contracts are common.
Public housing and student accommodation
Public housing is managed by ARTE Genova (the regional territorial housing agency for the Province of Genoa) and by the municipality, which publishes the ERP calls and rankings; there are also moderate-rent social housing programmes in regeneration areas (Valpolcevera, Cornigliano). ALiSEO, the regional student agency, allocates places in university residences through an annual call based on ISEE income and merit and runs the canteens.
