Who covers the city
For Milan, planning and oversight of the health and social care system rest with ATS Città Metropolitana di Milano, headquartered at corso Italia 52 (tel. 02 85781), which also runs vaccination campaigns and cancer screening programmes. Care is delivered by the city's ASSTs and IRCCS institutes, under the Lombard model described in the regional entry.
The large public hospitals
The Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda (an ASST, piazza Ospedale Maggiore 3) has an emergency department and four multidisciplinary centres: Cancer, Cardio, Transplant and Rare Diseases. The Policlinico di Milano – Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore (via Francesco Sforza 28) is a public IRCCS and hosts the Polo Centrale of the University of Milan with its medicine and dentistry degree courses. ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo brings together the San Paolo hospital (via di Rudinì 8) and the San Carlo hospital (via Pio II 3).
Choosing a GP
GP choice follows the regional procedure (online with SPID/CIE or at ASST counters); to get oriented, the ATS website publishes the "Trova Medico" tool, listing the area's general practitioners and freely chosen paediatricians.
