Sectors

Milan concentrates the headquarters functions of the Italian economy. Finance (Borsa Italiana, banks, insurers, funds, fintech) and strategic and legal consulting have their national offices here; fashion and luxury (fashion houses, showrooms, fashion weeks) and design (studios, furniture companies, Salone del Mobile) are complete chains, from creation to communication. Media, publishing and advertising remain concentrated in the city.

Pharmaceuticals and life sciences are growing (Italian headquarters of multinationals, Human Technopole and the MIND district on the former Expo site, research hospitals), as are ICT and digital (big tech offices, startups, scale-ups), real estate and construction (the large urban regeneration schemes), fairs and conferences (Fiera Milano in Rho and MiCo) and private healthcare. The Milano Monza Brianza Lodi Chamber of Commerce publishes the area's economic figures: firms, employment, exports, innovative startups.

Where people work and how to search

Business districts: the historic centre (banks, law firms, luxury), Porta Nuova and Garibaldi (UniCredit tower and other headquarters), CityLife (Generali, Allianz), Bicocca (Pirelli, research), Milanofiori in Assago and San Donato (Eni), MIND in Rho, Lambrate and Tortona for creatives and design. The outer ring (Sesto, Monza, Vimercate, Agrate) hosts industry and technology.

The market is open to newcomers: many companies work in English and vacancies go through online platforms, recruitment firms and professional networks more than public channels; the municipality and the Metropolitan City run the employment centres (AFOL). The employment and unemployment rates shown below are regional and among the best in Italy. Coworking spaces number in the hundreds, from large international operators (Porta Nuova, Centrale, Tortona) to neighbourhood spaces; costs are the highest in the country but flexible formulas are many.
