Climate and air: anti-smog plan and extra measures after exceedances

Traffic restrictions

The municipal ordinance (Prot. no. 358710/2026) bans, Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 18:30, private petrol, LPG and methane vehicles Euro 0-2, diesels up to Euro 4 and mopeds and motorcycles Euro 0-2 in the built-up area: the area bounded by the northern ring roads (Pirandello, Carducci, Pasternak), via Nuova Estense, strada Bellaria, strada Contrada, via Giardini, the Einaudi service road, strada Modena-Sassuolo and the Mistral ring road, excluding the access routes to car parks P1-P26. On ecological Sundays the ban also covers Euro 5 diesels. The bans are suspended on public transport strike days and on some holidays; vehicles enrolled in Move-In may circulate on weekdays.

Emergencies, heating and local measures

When the Arpae bulletin, checked on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, signals an emergency, from the next day the ban runs from 8:00 to 19:00 and includes Euro 5 diesels; slurry spreading and biomass heaters below "5 stars" are banned where another system exists. Heating may be switched on from 1 November, with indoor temperature limits and a ban on biomass stoves below "4 stars" and open fireplaces in homes with an alternative.

A measure specific to Modena: since the "Giardini" station has already exceeded the daily PM10 limit more than 25 times, from 1 October to 31 December 2026 outdoor charcoal or wood barbecues are banned, the biomass heating ban is stricter and traffic restrictions apply from 8:00 to 19:00. From January to March 2027 these measures return only if another 25 exceedances are recorded in the year.
