Overview

What kind of city

The heart of the city is the Piazza Grande ensemble: the Cathedral begun in 1099, the Torre Civica known as the Ghirlandina and the square with the Town Hall, inscribed together on the UNESCO List in 1997. The Ducal Palace, begun in 1634, housed the Este court for more than two centuries until 1859 and is now the seat of the Military Academy.

Besides the main town, the municipality includes many outlying villages (among them Albareto, Baggiovara, Cittanova and Villanova) and is divided into Quartieri (districts).

University, cars, traditions

The University of Modena traces its origins to around 1175 and since 1998 has been the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE). Next to the railway station the Enzo Ferrari Museum preserves the birthplace of Ferrari's founder; in the attic of the Town Hall the municipal vinegar loft keeps Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO. The urban bus network has 14 lines, 3 of them trolleybus routes.
