The universities
The University of Naples Federico II, founded in 1224, is among the world's oldest state universities and the largest in southern Italy: historic sites in the centre (via Mezzocannone, corso Umberto), the Monte Sant'Angelo campus in Fuorigrotta (sciences, economics), the Policlinico and the San Giovanni a Teduccio campus (Engineering, with the Apple Developer Academy and other industry programmes). L'Orientale, heir to the Chinese College of 1732, specialises in languages, Asian and African studies and political science, with sites in the historic centre. Parthenope, born as a naval institute, has economics, law, engineering and sport sciences between Chiaia and the Centro Direzionale. Suor Orsola Benincasa is a private university (humanities, education, law) on the hill above the Quartieri Spagnoli. The University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli is based in Caserta but has Medicine and other faculties in Naples. There are also the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory and the Academy of Fine Arts.
Student support
ADISURC (the Campania Region's agency for the right to university study) provides grants, beds in residences and canteen access through an annual call based on ISEE and merit, also open to international students with documentation from their home country. State university fees follow the national ISEE bands, with exemptions for low incomes; each university publishes its fee regulation.
Where students live
The historic centre around via Mezzocannone, Port'Alba and piazza Bellini is the historic student zone, with rooms for rent in old buildings; Materdei, Montesanto and the Sanità are nearby and cheaper alternatives. Fuorigrotta is the choice for those attending Monte Sant'Angelo. For San Giovanni a Teduccio many students stay in the centre and use Line 2 or the Circumvesuviana.
Programmes in English
Federico II and Parthenope offer master's degrees in English mainly in engineering, economics and sciences; L'Orientale has international tracks. The Apple Developer Academy, a free nine-month developer programme in San Giovanni a Teduccio, is taught in English and open to applicants from all over the world through selection. The updated list of English-taught programmes is on the Universitaly portal.
