Overview
Territory and cities
Campania is split between a very dense coastal belt (Gulf of Naples, Campanian plain, Agro nocerino-sarnese, Sele plain) and a depopulating Apennine interior (Sannio, Irpinia, upper Caserta area, inland Cilento). Naples is the capital and Italy's third city; Salerno, Giugliano, Torre del Greco, Caserta, Benevento and Avellino are the other main towns. The islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida and the Sorrento, Amalfi and Cilento coasts complete a shoreline of about 500 km. Population density is the highest in Italy, concentrated in the province of Naples.
Economy
The economy is dominated by services, retail and public administration, with industry holding on in a few hubs: aerospace (Leonardo and Avio Aero in Pomigliano, Tecnam in Capua, the Campania Aerospace District), automotive (Stellantis Pomigliano), shipbuilding (Fincantieri in Castellammare), rail (Hitachi Rail in Naples), pharmaceuticals, canning and agri-food (San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, Gragnano pasta, Sorrento and Amalfi lemons). Tourism is growing fast in Naples, Pompeii and on the coasts. Campania has one of the country's highest rates of unemployment and undeclared work and is part of the ZES unica.
Who moves here
People moving to Campania almost always choose Naples or Salerno: students at the seven universities, tourism and catering workers, ICT professionals (the Apple Developer Academy and several multinationals have offices in San Giovanni a Teduccio), health staff and teachers, plus a growing flow of remote workers and foreigners attracted by housing costs below Rome and Milan. Inland areas offer very cheap houses but reduced services and transport. The share of foreign residents is below the national average, with Ukrainian, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Moroccan and Eastern European communities.
