Anti-smog traffic light
The anti-smog traffic light (semaforo antismog) is the mechanism Piedmont uses to trigger temporary restrictions in advance so that the daily PM10 limit of 50 µg/m³ is not exceeded. Transport measures apply to the municipalities of the Turin agglomeration and to those with more than 10,000 inhabitants in the plain and hill zones: Novara is one of the 24 municipalities of the Plain Zone. Arpa Piemonte updates the traffic light on Monday, Wednesday and Friday by noon, from 15 September to 15 April, with forecasts for the same day and the following two.
What it means in Novara
The Comune di Novara website shows the traffic-light level for the coming days on its home page: at level 1 or 2, further specific restrictions apply on top of the permanent ones. Rules by vehicle type can vary from municipality to municipality: newcomers with a car should check on the municipal website whether it is affected.
