Overview
What kind of city it is
Novara has a small, quiet historic centre dominated by the dome of the Basilica of San Gaudenzio, Alessandro Antonelli's masterpiece: about 121 metres high and built over more than forty years, it is considered one of the most daring masonry structures in the world, and from its colonnades the view ranges from the Alpine arc to the skyscrapers of Milan. Another of Antonelli's projects, left unfinished, is linked to the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The Visconti-Sforza Castle houses the local tourist agency; the Coccia and Faraggiana theatres have their own seasons.
University and air quality
Novara is one of the three poles, with Alessandria and Vercelli, of the University of Eastern Piedmont (Università del Piemonte Orientale), established in 1998: the city hosts the School of Medicine, the economics and business department, the pharmaceutical sciences department and the university clinics of the Maggiore della Carità university hospital.
Novara is among the municipalities of Piedmont's Plain Zone where the regional anti-smog traffic light can trigger temporary traffic restrictions to prevent the daily PM10 limit from being exceeded.
