Sectors
The Sicilian Region, with its departments and agencies, the Comune and the Metropolitan City, state offices, courts, the three hospital trusts (Policlinico, Civico, Villa Sofia-Cervello) and the University are the main employers. Tourism is the most dynamic sector of the past decade and has multiplied jobs in accommodation, catering and services, often seasonal and precarious. The port provides work through ferries, cruises and the Fincantieri shipyard; ICT counts Palermo offices of large Italian software and consulting companies and a start-up ecosystem around the university. Retail and crafts remain widespread; the informal economy is significant and weighs on the statistics.
Businesses, coworking, public competitions
The Palermo and Enna Chamber of Commerce publishes business data and manages the register; the Comune and the Region fund self-employment desks. Coworking spaces have grown in the historic centre and between Politeama and Libertà, at prices below northern cities; fibre covers almost the whole city. The skilled market is small for the city's size, regional and health public competitions are the most travelled route, and graduate emigration to the North and abroad continues. Employment and unemployment rates are in the data block.
