Administrative structure

The Comune di Perugia covers a very large territory organised in a historic centre, urban districts and many villages (Ponte San Giovanni, San Sisto, Castel del Piano, Ponte Felcino, Ponte Valleceppi, San Marco, Ponte Pattoli and others), each with its own services and identity. The sub-municipal districts were abolished by the national reform that removed them in municipalities under 250,000 inhabitants; the municipality keeps local offices in the larger villages. Perugia is the capital of the Umbria Region and of the Province of Perugia.

Languages and communities

Perugino is a central Umbrian dialect with recognisable features of intonation and vocabulary; regional Italian is everyone's language. The presence of the University for Foreigners, devoted since the 1920s to teaching Italian language and culture to foreigners, and of the State University makes Perugia a multilingual city for its size, with student communities from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The largest resident foreign communities are Romanian, Albanian, Moroccan, Ecuadorian and Ukrainian.

Patron saints and institutions

The main patron is Saint Constantius (San Costanzo), celebrated on 29 January with the torcolo, the feast-day cake; with him Saint Herculanus and Saint Lawrence, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. Perugia was one of the twelve Etruscan cities (the Etruscan Arch, the Etruscan Well, the Volumni Hypogeum) and a free medieval commune (Fontana Maggiore, Palazzo dei Priori). Institutions: the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Palazzo dei Priori, the State University (1308), the University for Foreigners (Palazzo Gallenga), the Pietro Vannucci Academy of Fine Arts (1573), the Morlacchi Conservatory, Teatro Morlacchi, the Umbria Jazz Foundation, Perugina.
