Operators and network
Urban road transport is run by Busitalia Sita Nord (FS group), which operates the city and village lines and regional intercity buses. The Minimetrò, opened in 2008 and run by Minimetrò S.p.A., is an automated line of about three kilometres with frequent cabins that climbs from the Pian di Massiano car park through Cortonese, Madonna Alta, Fontivegge (railway station), Case Bruciate and Cupa to Pincetto, in the historic centre; it runs from early morning to evening, with later service on summer weekend nights. Tickets are integrated with urban buses; the Minimetrò pass is issued at Busitalia ticket offices. From the Piazza Partigiani, Pellini and Sant'Antonio car parks, public escalators, partly inside the Rocca Paolina, take you to the centre free of charge.
Trains and airport
Perugia Fontivegge station, below the centre and linked by the Minimetrò, is on the Foligno-Terontola line: trains to Rome (Intercity and regional, two hours or more) and to Florence (regional with a change or slow direct services) are not fast, and many commuters to Rome use coach services. Perugia Sant'Anna station serves the former FCU regional line to Umbertide, Città di Castello and Terni, with partial service. Umbria's international airport San Francesco d'Assisi is at Sant'Egidio, a dozen kilometres towards Assisi, with bus links to the city timed to flights; frequent flyers also use Rome Fiumicino and Florence.
- ZTL: the acropolis is almost entirely a camera-controlled limited traffic zone; residents apply to the municipality for permits. The centre is walked, with steep changes in level between Porta Sole, Corso Garibaldi and Borgo XX Giugno.
- Parking: paid car parks below the centre (Piazza Partigiani, Pellini, Sant'Antonio, Briglie di Braccio) with free escalators and lifts; park-and-ride at Pian di Massiano with the Minimetrò.
- Cycling: the hilly centre discourages daily cycling; cycle paths at the Percorso Verde in Pian di Massiano and along the Tiber at Ponte San Giovanni and Ponte Felcino.
- Car: needed for the villages and for getting around Umbria; the Perugia-Bettolle motorway link and the E45 are the main arteries.
