Climate: 819 metres, snow and clean air
Temperate mountain climate: cold snowy winters, pleasant summers with cool nights, rain and fog from autumn to spring. High seismic risk (earthquakes of 1857 and 1980). Good air for most of the year, with some PM10 exceedances in the heating months.

The climate in short
At 819 metres Potenza has the coldest climate among southern regional capitals: long winters with frequent frosts and snow several times a year, which can bring the city to a halt for a few days; late rainy springs; summers hot by day but with cool nights, and maximum temperatures clearly below those of the Ionian coast and Bari. Autumn is the wettest season; fog and low cloud are common on the ridge.
Earthquakes, landslides, wildfires
Basilicata is one of Italy's regions with the highest seismic hazard: Potenza was badly damaged by the 1857 earthquake and by the Irpinia-Basilicata earthquake of 23 November 1980, which produced the prefabricated district of Bucaletto. Anyone renting or buying does well to ask about the year of construction and any seismic upgrades. The slopes around the city and the Basento valley are prone to landslides after heavy rain; in summer wildfire risk concerns the woods and pastures of the surroundings more than the urban area.
Water and air
Water is distributed by Acquedotto Lucano; the region is rich in water resources and through its reservoirs (Pertusillo, Monte Cotugno) also supplies Apulia, but drought years have reduced reserves. Air quality is good for most of the year thanks to altitude and wind; exceedances of the daily PM10 limit concentrate in the cold months, linked to domestic heating (see data).
