The Mediterranea University
The Mediterranea began as the Libero Istituto Universitario di Architettura, recognised in 1968 and turned into the Istituto Universitario Statale di Architettura in 1970; under Law 590 of 1982 it became the University of Reggio Calabria from the 1982/83 academic year and since 2001 it has been called Università degli Studi Mediterranea. For 2026/27 it offers 28 degree programmes grouped in ten areas: agriculture, architecture, biotechnology, design, economics, law, engineering, nursing, sports science and humanities. It has Erasmus+ programmes, services for international students and a website in English.
The Cittadella
The university Cittadella (Via dell'Università 25, formerly Salita Melissari) covers 384,000 m² on the hills above the port, with five departments and 60 laboratories: the Architecture complex, with the rectorate and offices in the four towers; block D for law, economics and humanities; at Feo di Vito the Engineering complex (DIIES and DICEAM departments) and, on the highest hill, the Agriculture complex. There are two canteens, at Architecture and at Engineering. Students and staff ride free on several ATAM lines under an agreement (see Transport).
