Overview
In short
The national tourism portal presents it as the oldest Magna Graecia colony in southern Italy. An ally of Rome in the Pyrrhic wars and later a municipium, Byzantine and Norman, it was damaged by the earthquakes of 1562 and 1783. The earthquake and tsunami of 28 December 1908 nearly destroyed it, together with Messina; reconstruction in Liberty style changed its appearance. From the Lungomare Falcomatà you can see Sicily, the Strait and, in the distance, Etna.
City and services
The Comune is divided into five circoscrizioni (districts): Centre, East, North, South and Centre-South. The National Archaeological Museum, in Piazza De Nava, holds the Riace Bronzes. The Mediterranea University, a state university since 1982/83, has its university Cittadella on the hills above the port. The "Tito Minniti" Strait airport is at Ravagnese, about 8 km from the centre; Blu Jet fast passenger ships link the city with Messina; ATAM has renewed about half its fleet with electric buses using PNRR funds.
