The civic centre

For the Comune, the Palazzo Comunale is «the place of the city's civic identity». It stands in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, near the forum of ancient Reate, and houses the municipal offices and the historical-artistic section of the Civic Museum. The building incorporates the old 13th-century Priors' palace, still recognisable in the masonry of the east side, and is the result of extensions and consolidation works that continued into the twentieth century.

Transformations

In 1563 Jacopo Barozzi, known as Vignola, was commissioned to redesign the side facing via Pescheria; between 1748 and 1752 the Roman architect Filippo Brioni designed the late-Baroque façade. The 1898 earthquake damaged the building: its consolidation was entrusted in 1909 to Cesare Bazzani, who extended the portico and added the clock, the Savoy coat of arms and the city's own. The travertine-clad tower on the west side was built between 1939 and 1956; the council chamber on the main floor is in Art Nouveau style.
