Ariminum
Rimini was founded by the Romans in 268 BC under the name Ariminum. The Arch of Augustus was built in 27 BC to celebrate the emperor and is among the oldest surviving Roman arches; the Bridge of Tiberius, begun under Augustus and completed by Tiberius between AD 14 and 21, is one of the few Marecchia crossings to survive the Second World War. The Domus del Chirurgo, a late-imperial house found in the excavations of piazza Ferrari and attributed to a surgeon named Eutyches, has been open to the public since 2008.
The Malatesta
Castel Sismondo was commissioned by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta and built between 1437 and 1446. The Tempio Malatestiano, a Gothic church remodelled in the mid-15th century with the contribution of Matteo de' Pasti, Agostino di Duccio and Leon Battista Alberti, holds a fresco by Piero della Francesca and Giotto's Crucifix.
Fellini
Federico Fellini came from Rimini. Borgo San Giuliano, an old fishing village across the Bridge of Tiberius, has murals showing scenes from his life and films; the Fulgor cinema has been restored and the Fellini Museum occupies Castel Sismondo, Piazza Malatesta and Palazzo del Fulgor.
