Getting around: metro A, B and C, Metrebus, airports, ZTL
ATAC runs three metro lines, six tram lines and the bus network; Metrebus tickets are integrated with urban regional trains. Fiumicino is linked to Termini by the Leonardo Express and to other stations by the FL1; Ciampino by bus. The centre is covered by several camera-controlled ZTLs; the Fascia Verde restricts the oldest vehicles.

The network
The metro has three lines: A (Battistini–Anagnina, via Vatican/Ottaviano, Spagna, Termini and the Tuscolana area), B with the B1 branch (Rebibbia/Jonio–Laurentina, via Tiburtina, Termini, Colosseo, Piramide, Garbatella and EUR) and C, from Monte Compatri-Pantano to Colosseo-Fori Imperiali, with interchanges with line A at San Giovanni and line B at Colosseo. Termini is the only interchange between A and B.
Trams (lines 2, 3, 5, 8, 14, 19) mainly serve the Prenestina–Termini axis, Trastevere–Argentina (line 8) and the 3/19 arc between Villa Borghese, San Lorenzo and Porta Maggiore. Buses cover the rest of the city, with variable frequencies. FL regional railways stop at urban stations (Tiburtina, Ostiense, Trastevere, Tuscolana) and are useful for crossing the city; the Roma-Lido line links Piramide to Ostia.
Metrebus tickets and passes
The Metrebus Roma system integrates metro, buses, trams and regional trains within the municipal territory. The BIT (integrated time ticket) is valid for 100 minutes from validation, with one metro ride; there are 24, 48 and 72-hour tickets, the weekly CIS and monthly and annual passes. At metro stations you can also pay with a contactless card at the gate (Tap&Go). Current prices are on the ATAC website and in the data below.
Airports and stations
Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) is linked to Roma Termini by the Leonardo Express, a non-stop train taking about 32 minutes with departures every 15 minutes, and by FL1 regional trains stopping at Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana and Tiburtina (cheaper, but they do not reach Termini). Ciampino, the low-cost airlines' airport, has no station: it is reached by direct coaches to Termini or by ATAC lines to the Anagnina and Laurentina metro stations.
Termini is the main station (high-speed, regional, metro A and B); Tiburtina is the second high-speed hub, with the long-distance coach station, and Ostiense/Trastevere serve trains to Fiumicino and the coast.
ZTL and cars
The historic centre is protected by several ZTLs (Centro storico, Tridente, Trastevere, San Lorenzo, Testaccio, Monti and others) controlled by electronic gates, active in daytime hours on weekdays and, for some, on weekend evenings too: entering without a permit means a fine for every gate crossed. The much larger Fascia Verde bans the most polluting vehicles. Anyone moving here with a car must register the plate for a residents' permit in their municipio; in the centre, parking is paid (blue lines) and spaces are scarce. In practice, people living inside the ring road and working in the centre do without a car or use it only at weekends.
