Overview
What kind of city
The regional tourism guide presents Trani as a "città d'arte" (art city). The centre revolves around the Cathedral, the city's main religious building, built under Norman rule in Apulian Romanesque style, and the port, whose ancient harbour, according to the guide, flourished between the 13th and 15th centuries. The nineteenth-century district grew around piazza della Repubblica after the walls were demolished.
Cathedral, Castle and Giudecca
The Cathedral has a bell tower of about 58 metres and combines the upper church of San Nicola Pellegrino, the 12th-century crypt with the saint's relics and the hypogeum of San Leucio. The Swabian Castle was built by Frederick II of Swabia, inspired by the Crusader castles of the Holy Land; it later became a prison and now houses the Museo del Castello. In the Giudecca, the old Jewish quarter near the port, one can visit the Scolagrande synagogue and Santa Maria di Scolanova.
