Cost of living in Trento
An expensive city for housing relative to its size, with quotations close to those of the big northern capitals, and service and restaurant prices above the national average. In return transport, nurseries, health and provincial public services are affordable and good. Savings in Gardolo, Mattarello and the valley municipalities.

What costs more and what costs less
Housing is the critical item: OMI quotations for the centre and hillside districts are among the highest of mid-sized provincial capitals, because the valley floor offers little building land, demand from students, researchers and public employees is steady and tourism has brought short-term rentals into the centre. Restaurants, bars and personal services also cost more than the Italian average, in line with the province's high income.
Thanks to provincial policies, public services cost less: nurseries and schools with income-banded fees, healthcare with few co-payments, urban and provincial transport with subsidised passes (free for many categories of students), school and university canteens. The Trentino Trasporti urban pass is cheap and integrated with provincial buses and the Trento–Malé railway.
Where to save
Rents fall in Gardolo, Spini and Canova to the north, Mattarello and Ravina to the south, the farther hillside suburbs (Meano, Vigolo Baselga) and the municipalities of the Rotaliana and Valsugana linked by train (Lavis, Mezzocorona, Pergine). Students aim for rooms in San Bartolameo, Bolghera and Povo or the Opera Universitaria residences, which also offers subsidised housing and reduced-price canteen meals to those meeting the ISEE requirements.
The Province pays rent contributions and the care and family allowance to those resident for a set number of years: requirements and deadlines are on the provincial portal.
