Overview

Geography

The region is entirely mountainous: the Adige valley crosses it from north (Brenner) to south (Verona) and links the two capitals, Bolzano/Bozen and Trento, the regional capital. The Dolomites lie to the east, Ortles-Cevedale and the Stelvio to the west, Brenta and Adamello to the south-west. Other towns: Merano, Bressanone and Brunico in South Tyrol; Rovereto, Pergine and Riva del Garda in Trentino. Trentino also touches Lake Garda.

Economy

The economy combines tourism (two strong seasons, winter and summer), specialised agriculture (apples from Val di Non and Val Venosta, wine, milk), crafts and small industry, the provincial public administration and, in Trento, research and university. South Tyrol has the highest employment rate in Italy; both provinces keep almost all the tax revenue and fund public services above the national average.

Who moves here and languages

Newcomers work in tourism (seasonal), health care and crafts, or study in Trento (a well-regarded public university) or Bolzano (trilingual university). In South Tyrol public life is bilingual Italian–German: public-sector jobs require the bilingualism certificate (patentino) and are shared among the language groups (proportional system). Ladin is official in Val Gardena, Val Badia and Val di Fassa; in Trentino the Mòcheno and Cimbrian minorities are also protected.
