First steps with the municipality
- Residence registration
The declaration is filed online with SPID or CIE through the national registry or the municipal services, or at the registry desk on Via Belenzani or the circoscrizione offices, by appointment booked on the municipal website («Prenota appuntamento»). Proof of title to the dwelling is required; the local police verify the address.
- Electronic identity card
Booking on the Interior Ministry's CIE agenda or from the municipal website; issued at the desk and delivered by post. The CIE also gives access to provincial online services.
- Health and provincial services
Choosing a GP goes through the provincial health agency (APSS), online or at its desks; the hospital is the Santa Chiara. Nurseries, schools, contributions and benefits are managed by the Province through its desks and online services portal.
Waste, water, services
Waste collection is by Dolomiti Ambiente and is door-to-door across the municipality: organic, paper, light packaging, glass and residual waste are put out on the days of your zone's calendar; residual waste goes in a personal chipped bin and the pay-as-you-throw tariff depends on the number of emptyings, so sorting well pays. The collection centres (CRM) take bulky items, garden waste and electronics. Trento's recycling rate is consistently among the highest of Italian provincial capitals.
Tap water comes from mountain springs, is drinkable and of excellent quality; public fountains are numerous. Healthcare is run by the provincial APSS, with the Santa Chiara hospital in the city and Villa Igea; the new hospital complex is under construction.
- Shopping: the Thursday market and farmers' markets, supermarkets of the Trentino consumer cooperatives (Famiglia Cooperativa) in every district, large retail in Gardolo and the outer-ring malls; shopping streets Via Belenzani, Via Manci, Via San Pietro, Via Oss Mazzurana and Via Roma.
- Libraries: the Trento municipal library on Via Roma, with branches in the circoscrizioni and free lending; the central university library (BUC) on Via Verdi open to all on registration with long hours.
- Newcomers: Cinformi, the Province's immigration information centre on Via Zambra, handles permits, family reunification, Italian courses; the University's welcome office for students and researchers; the municipal Informagiovani; many associations and social cooperatives offer volunteering as a way into the community.
- Hours and pace: the city is active early in the morning and quiet after dinner; many shops in the centre close on Sundays.
