Sea and Karst

Barcola is the city beach: a kilometres-long concrete and pine waterfront, free of charge, where from May to September people sunbathe on the "topolini" platforms and swim in the gulf; further on are the historic bathing establishments of Grignano and Sistiana. In the centre, the Bagno Marino Lanterna (El Pedocin) has kept men and women separated since 1903. On the Karst, walk the Napoleonica path from Opicina to Prosecco, in Val Rosandra and along the coast towards Duino; in winter the Bora stops everything for a few days at a time.

Food

Buffets are the Triestine taverns of Austro-Hungarian tradition: boiled meats served from the "caldaia" with mustard and horseradish, jota soup, goulash, pan-fried potatoes. Osmize are Karst farms that open in rotation to sell their own wine and cured meats, signalled by a leafy branch; find them with the local calendars. Coffee has its own vocabulary (nero, capo, capo in b) and a tradition of roasters; fish and marinated anchovies along the waterfront and in Barcola.

  • Sport: Triestina plays at the Nereo Rocco stadium; Pallacanestro Trieste at the PalaTrieste; sailing and rowing in the clubs of Barcola and the waterfront, with the Barcolana in October.
  • Parks: Giardino Pubblico Muzio de Tommasini, Villa Giulia park, Miramare park, Bosco Farneto; the San Giovanni park in the former psychiatric hospital hosts a rose garden, bar and cooperatives.
  • Evenings: bars between Cavana, the Ghetto, via Torino and piazza Hortis; pubs and concerts along viale XX Settembre and in Roiano; Teatro Verdi for opera, Teatro Rossetti for drama.
  • Free: the waterfront walk and Molo Audace at sunset, the climb to San Giusto, markets in Ponterosso, civic libraries, first Sundays of the month in state museums.
