Overview
Geography and cities
Friuli-Venezia Giulia joins two histories: Friuli (Udine, Pordenone), a land of plain, hills and the Carnic and Julian Alps, and Venezia Giulia (Trieste, Gorizia), a narrow coastal and karst strip on the Slovenian border. Trieste, the capital, is a Habsburg port city geographically isolated from the rest of the region; Udine is the centre of Friuli, Pordenone the industrial hub towards Veneto, Gorizia a border town joined to Nova Gorica.
Economy and statute
The economy rests on the port of Trieste (among Italy's largest by tonnage, with a free port), a dense scientific system (SISSA, ICTP, Area Science Park, the Elettra synchrotron), shipbuilding (Monfalcone), household appliances (Pordenone), chairs and furniture (Manzano), knives (Maniago), San Daniele ham, Collio wines and coffee. The special statute (1963) gives the Region its own powers and a large share of tax revenue.
Who moves here and languages
Newcomers include researchers and students in Trieste and Udine, industrial workers in Pordenone and Monfalcone, and retirees drawn by moderate costs; the population is among the oldest in Italy. Besides Italian, the Region recognises Friulian (spoken by much of the Friulian population), Slovene (provinces of Trieste, Gorizia and eastern Udine) and German (Val Canale, Sauris, Timau), with offices for their use in public administration.
