Two districts for an amphibious municipality
Territorial care is run by the ULSS 3 Serenissima health authority, which splits the municipality into two districts: District 1 “Venezia Centro Storico, Isole ed Estuario” and District 2 “Venezia Terraferma, Marcon e Quarto d'Altino”. The district is the reference point for access to all the authority's services, and family doctors, paediatricians and out-of-hours doctors work with it.
Hospitals: Castello and Mestre
In the lagoon the SS. Giovanni e Paolo Civil Hospital, in the Castello district (Castello 6777), is the main island hospital: about 310 beds inside the buildings of the old Scuola Grande di San Marco. On the mainland the dell'Angelo Hospital in Mestre (via Paccagnella 11) is the authority's main hospital and the second-level (high-specialisation) reference for the Venetian and metropolitan area; it is reached with ACTV buses H1 and H2 and by train at the Mestre Ospedale station.
Bookings and GP
Visits and tests are booked through the CUP, single number 041 844 844 valid for all four districts, at the desks or online; if you cannot book, the “richiesta contatto” web form gets the CUP staff to call you back. Registration with the health service and choosing or changing your GP or paediatrician can also be done through ULSS 3's online administrative desk.
116117 for non-urgent needs
The 116117 Operations Centre, provided for by ministerial decree 77/2022, is active 24 hours a day as the reference number for non-urgent health needs: it acts as a first filter and directs you to your GP, the out-of-hours service or other territorial services, transferring the call to the emergency services when needed.
