The Pilastro

The Pilastro estate was started by Bologna's Istituto Autonomo Case Popolari (IACP) in 1959, with a brief for a large public housing village for fifteen thousand inhabitants on more than eighty hectares; construction was completed only in the late 1980s. The estate's landmark building is the Virgolone, introduced in the 1975 variant. A University of Bologna study of Glauco Gresleri's design judges the village's public spaces today to be lacking in quality.
