Overview
Where it is and who it suits
Bicocca is in Municipio 9, the north-eastern periphery, and is NIL sheet 15 of the PGT. It is bounded by viale Fulvio Testi to the west, the Milan–Monza railway (Greco Pirelli station) to the east, via Chiese and Parco Nord to the north and the Greco area to the south; viale Sarca and viale dell'Innovazione are the internal axes.
Who lives here: families and workers in the residential complexes built under the Bicocca project, students and researchers of the university, employees of the head offices (Pirelli, Deutsche Bank). It suits those who study or work here, those looking for recent housing with garage and greenery at below-centre prices, and M5 users; less so anyone who wants neighbourhood life and bars in the evening.
Layout and where it comes from
The layout is Gregotti Associati's: regular blocks, arcades, piazza dell'Ateneo Nuovo and piazza della Scienza as the campus centres, the Collina dei Ciliegi built from demolition rubble, the old Borgo Pirelli workers' housing still standing. The Teatro degli Arcimboldi (viale dell'Innovazione), Pirelli HangarBicocca (via Chiese 2, free entry) and the Pirelli headquarters complete the picture.
In two sentences: Pirelli settled here in 1908 and came to employ thousands of workers, closing its last operations in 1992; the competition launched by Pirelli in 1985 and won by Gregotti turned the area into a district of university (the first course opened in 1991, the university was established in 1998), offices, theatre and housing, largely completed in 2005.
Evenings, noise and tourism
By day the quarter is animated by students; after 8 pm and at weekends it is silent, with few bars and restaurants clustered in piazza della Scienza and on viale Sarca. The noise is that of viale Fulvio Testi (a state road) and the railway on the east side. Tourism is absent, apart from evenings at the Teatro degli Arcimboldi and exhibitions at the Hangar. The wide, windy squares and the arcades empty in the evening are the feature that divides residents.
