Shopping and markets
The Testaccio neighbourhood market, moved in 2012 from the square of the same name to the covered building between via Beniamino Franklin, via Alessandro Volta, via Aldo Manuzio and via Lorenzo Ghiberti, is the heart of the district: traditional stalls for fruit, meat, fish and cheese, street-food and Roman-cooking counters, clothing and household goods, plus events and visits to the Roman horreum excavated beneath the building. It is open mornings Monday to Saturday.
Around the market and on via Marmorata there are medium-sized supermarkets, bakeries, pork butchers and historic delicatessens; the district is known for the Roman offal cuisine that grew up around the slaughterhouse.
Services, health, schools, library
Pharmacies are on via Marmorata, piazza Testaccio and via Galvani. The Nuovo Regina Margherita in Trastevere, over ponte Sublicio, houses a community health centre (Casa della Comunità) and a community hospital for low-intensity care; a little further on is the Fatebenefratelli hospital on the Tiber Island. There are state nursery, primary and lower secondary schools in the rione and licei a short distance away on the Aventine and in Ostiense.
The Enzo Tortora library of the Biblioteche di Roma network, in via Nicola Zabaglia, is the rione's public library, with a study room and a children's section.
Green space and leisure
Real green space is on the Aventine, ten minutes' uphill walk: the municipal Rose Garden (open in spring), the Orange Garden with its view over the city, the Sant'Alessio park and, going down towards piazza Albania, the gardens of viale Aventino. In the rione there are the garden of piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice with a playground and the piazzale of the Mattatoio, used for events; the Non-Catholic Cemetery is visited like a park.
In the evening the rione runs on two registers: neighbourhood trattorie and pizzerie between via Marmorata, via Luca della Robbia and piazza Testaccio, and the nightlife of via di Monte Testaccio and via Galvani, with clubs and bars in the caves at the foot of Monte dei Cocci, open until late at night at weekends. The former Mattatoio hosts exhibitions and performances and the Città dell'Altra Economia organises markets and events.
