Overview
Where it is and where it comes from
Aurora belongs to Circoscrizione 7, which the city calls "Aurora – Vanchiglia – Sassi Superga – Madonna del Pilone", with offices at corso Vercelli 15.
Its best-known part is Porta Palazzo. Piazza della Repubblica, formerly piazza Emanuele Filiberto, developed in the first half of the 19th century between the city's northern gate and the Balon quarter outside the walls, and soon became the great city market; the surrounding blocks had been rebuilt from 1729 to a design by Juvarra, as a new monumental entrance to the city.
The same area includes Borgo Dora, with the Arsenale della Pace (a military arsenal until 1862, since 1964 a place of welcome and solidarity started by Ernesto Olivero), and Valdocco, with the basilica of Maria Ausiliatrice and the Casa Museo don Bosco.
The river and the factories
Along the Dora there were manufacturing activities that used the river's water to drive machinery: the Italo Calvino city library, at lungo Dora Agrigento 94, occupies the building of the former Durio tannery. At the entrance of SMAT stands Arnaldo Pomodoro's sculpture "Cuneo con frecce", above the Molassi canal that carried water from the Dora to the mills. At via Bologna 32, inside the Nuvola, is the Museo Lavazza.
Who works at the market
According to a press article of February 2014, about one stall in four at the Porta Palazzo market then had a foreign holder; among foreign workers, North Africans, mainly Moroccans, prevailed in fruit and vegetables, South Americans at the fish market and Romanians in the butchers' stalls of the covered pavilions. The same article named safety, real and perceived, as a priority of city policy for the area, after a decade of regeneration.
