Working in Turin

A manufacturing economy in transition: automotive and components, aerospace, ICT and business services, banking, publishing, research. The job market is slower than Milan's but living costs are lower. Coworking spaces and incubators cluster between the centre, Aurora (OGR) and Lingotto.

Sectors

Turin was Italy's factory town and industry remains central: the Mirafiori plant (Stellantis), Iveco and an automotive components supply chain that the Chamber of Commerce tracks in a dedicated report. Aerospace is the second pillar, with Leonardo (aircraft, at Caselle), Thales Alenia Space (space modules) and a district of suppliers. ICT and digital services are growing, helped by Politecnico graduates, as is applied research (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Fondazione LINKS, corporate research centres).

Services include the headquarters of Intesa Sanpaolo, insurance (Reale Mutua), publishing and media (La Stampa, Einaudi, Rai with its production centre), cultural and conference tourism. Public administration (municipality, metropolitan city, region, universities, health service) is a large and stable employer.

Job hunting and where people work

Quarterly figures on firms, exports and employment are published by the Chamber of Commerce («Torino Congiuntura», «Cruscotto economico», the Excelsior system on skills demand). The employment and unemployment rates shown below are the ISTAT regional ones: Turin has historically had a higher unemployment rate than Milan and the rest of the North-West.

Where people work: the centre and the Intesa Sanpaolo tower for finance and services; Mirafiori and the south-west for industry; the Porta Susa area and the Spina Centrale for offices and new headquarters; Lingotto (fairs, offices, university); OGR Tech (Officine Grandi Riparazioni) with accelerators and startups. Coworking spaces cluster in the centre, San Salvario, Aurora and Vanchiglia; the Politecnico's incubator (I3P) and the University's 2i3T support spin-offs.
