Lingotto

A district of Circoscrizione 8 shaped by the former Fiat Lingotto plant, closed in 1982 and converted to a design by Renzo Piano into a hub for trade fairs, shopping, museums and university teaching, with the test track still on the roof. Since 2021 metro line 1 continues beyond Lingotto to piazza Bengasi.

Overview

For neighbourhoods we only show dedicated figures; otherwise we point to the city page.

Where it is

Lingotto belongs to Circoscrizione 8 together with San Salvario, Cavoretto, Borgo Po, Nizza Millefonti and Filadelfia; the circoscrizione's offices are at via Campana 32.

The district's landmark is the Lingotto complex on via Nizza: the former Fiat plant, a symbol of Turin's industrialisation, closed in 1982, and its reuse is part of the conversion of industrial areas the city began at the end of the last century.

The Lingotto complex

The conversion is by Renzo Piano: a multifunctional hub of 246,000 square metres that hosts events such as the Salone del Libro book fair, a shopping centre, the Giovanni Agnelli Auditorium and a satellite campus of the Politecnico di Torino.

The track Fiat used to test its cars is still on the roof, now the "Pista 500", with a roof garden and contemporary artworks. Above the roof are the "Scrigno" (treasure chest), home since 2002 to the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli, the "Bolla", a glass sphere suspended 40 metres up, and the heliport built in 1994.

Across the railway

The Lingotto railway splits the south of the city in two. The Olympic Arch, inaugurated in 2006 for the XX Winter Olympic Games, joins the two parts; from the Lingotto belvedere on the track side, a footbridge built for the Olympics leads to the former Mercati generali (wholesale markets) area.

Living

  • Cost of living

Turin is among the cheapest large Italian cities: rents and purchase prices are well below Milan, Rome, Florence and Bologna. Winter heating and, for drivers, parking and the ZTL weigh more. Outside the centre rents fall quickly.

  • Housing

Lingotto has no OMI zone of its own: the data block below refers to the peripheral zone D16 «Nizza Millefonti»; the list also includes D17 «Filadelfia – Traiano». In the former MOI buildings in via Giordano Bruno EDISU Piemonte has 150 student beds.

  • Daily life

The Lingotto complex holds a shopping centre, Eataly with the Museo Carpano, the Pinacoteca Agnelli and the Pista 500 roof garden; at via Nizza 230 is the Dental School of the Città della Salute e della Scienza.

  • Safety

112 is the single emergency number; 113, 115 and 118 remain active. Low violent crime, frequent pickpocketing and tourist scams in big cities. Civil Protection weather and seismic alerts and IT-alert messages on mobile phones.

Arriving and staying

  • Entry & residence

Rules depend on who is arriving: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens (no visa, registration with the Comune after three months), non-EU citizens for stays up to 90 days (Schengen rule, type C visa where required) and for long stays (national type D visa and a residence permit within eight working days of arrival).

  • Transport

Metro line 1 with Lingotto, Italia 61 – Regione Piemonte and Bengasi stations, the last two opened on 23 April 2021. Park-and-ride at Bengasi and Lingotto Fiere. On Fridays and Saturdays the metro runs until 1 a.m.

  • Health

The whole city falls under ASL Città di Torino (head office at via San Secondo 29), which runs four city hospitals; the Maria Vittoria hosts a DEA with an emergency department. At corso Bramante 88 is Città della Salute e della Scienza, a university hospital trust created by merging three regional reference hospitals, among them the Molinette.

Work and study

  • Work

A manufacturing economy in transition: automotive and components, aerospace, ICT and business services, banking, publishing, research. The job market is slower than Milan's but living costs are lower. Coworking spaces and incubators cluster between the centre, Aurora (OGR) and Lingotto.

  • Study

Two large public universities: the Politecnico di Torino (engineering, architecture, design, many master's degrees in English) and the University of Turin (all other fields, with campuses across the city). EDISU Piemonte runs grants, residences and canteens. San Salvario, Vanchiglia, Crocetta and Aurora are the student districts.

  • Climate & environment

Continental lowland climate at the foot of the Alps: cold, damp winters with fog and temperature inversions, hot summers. In the cold months Turin is consistently among the Italian provincial capitals with the most days above the PM10 limit; Arpa Piemonte publishes a bulletin and anti-smog measures.

    Turin
  • Culture & relationships

A country of strong local identities: dialects still spoken at home, cuisines and festivals that differ from region to region. Formality with 'Lei', rigid meal times, slow paper-based bureaucracy. Non-EU citizens with a long-stay permit sign an integration agreement with credits.
