Overview
Territory and cities
Abruzzo is crossed by the highest peaks of the Apennines (Gran Sasso 2,912 m, Maiella, Velino-Sirente) and hosts three national parks and one regional park; the narrow, hilly coastal strip concentrates the population. The capital is L'Aquila, at 700 metres altitude, hit by the earthquake of 6 April 2009 and still under reconstruction in its historic centre; Pescara is the most populous city and forms a continuous urban area on the coast with Chieti, Montesilvano and Francavilla; Teramo is the fourth provincial capital. Other towns: Avezzano (Marsica), Sulmona, Lanciano, Vasto.
Economy
The economy is more industrial than the southern average: the Stellantis plant at Atessa (former Sevel, light commercial vehicles) and its supplier chain in the Val di Sangro, pharmaceuticals and electronics in L'Aquila and Avezzano, the Gran Sasso National Laboratories (INFN), pasta in Fara San Martino, wine (Montepulciano d'Abruzzo) and olive oil. Tourism combines sea (Costa dei Trabocchi, Pescara, Vasto) and mountains (Roccaraso, Campo Felice, Campo Imperatore). Abruzzo has been part of the ZES unica for the South since 2024.
Who moves here
People moving to Abruzzo are often workers in the Val di Sangro or the Pescara–Chieti area, students at the three universities (L'Aquila, Chieti-Pescara, Teramo) or the Gran Sasso Science Institute, or foreigners buying cheap houses in inland villages; the region has a community of northern European and North American retirees in the villages around L'Aquila and Teramo. Mountain municipalities are losing population and services.
