Rail

The only active railway is Aosta–Ivrea–Chivasso–Turin: because of the electrification works, replacement buses have run on the Aosta–Ivrea section since January 2024, and since 15 December 2024 the line has been closed continuously. RFI plans to reopen the Ivrea–Pont-Saint-Martin section from 11 January 2027 and gives 12 June 2027, a date still to be confirmed, as the end of the closure. The Aosta–Pré-Saint-Didier line (upper valley) has been suspended for years. Check the state of works before relying on the train for commuting.

Buses and airports

Buses cover the whole region with regional lines and Aosta urban services (run by companies under regional concession) and links to Turin, Milan and the airports; in winter many resorts run ski buses. Aosta airport has no scheduled flights: people use Turin Caselle (about an hour and a half), Milan Malpensa and Geneva.

Passes

To France: the Mont Blanc tunnel (Courmayeur–Chamonix, tolled, with multi-year scheduled autumn closures for works) and the Little St Bernard pass (La Thuile–Bourg-Saint-Maurice, closed in winter). To Switzerland: the Great St Bernard tunnel (open all year, tolled) and the pass of the same name (summer only). The Great and Little St Bernard passes normally reopen between May and June. Cable cars: Skyway Monte Bianco (Courmayeur–Punta Helbronner) and Aosta–Pila.
