Climate and hazards
Trieste with the bora wind and mild winters, a very rainy Friulian plain with muggy summers, Carnic and Julian Alps among the snowiest and wettest areas in Italy. Friuli in seismic zones 1 and 2 (1976 earthquake); hail and flash floods. Better air than the rest of the North.

Bora, rain, snow
Trieste has a mild coastal climate exposed to the bora, a north-easterly wind that in winter exceeds 100 km/h and shapes city life (handrails along streets, closure of waterfronts and piers). The Friulian plain (Udine, Pordenone) has cold winters with less fog than the central Po plain, hot summers with violent thunderstorms and hail; it is one of the rainiest areas in Italy, with the Julian pre-Alps (Musi, Uccea) at national maxima. The Carnic and Julian Alps (Tarvisio, Sella Nevea, Zoncolan, Piancavallo) have snowy winters from December to April.
Seismicity and alerts
Friuli is the area of highest seismic hazard in northern Italy: the earthquake of 6 May 1976 (Gemona, Venzone, Osoppo) killed almost a thousand people and the reconstruction became the reference model for Italian civil protection. Much of upper Friuli and the Pordenone area falls in zones 1 and 2 of the national classification; Trieste and the lower plain in zone 3. The regional Civil Protection has an operations room in Palmanova and a highly developed alert system for floods of the Tagliamento, Isonzo and pre-Alpine torrents and for strong winds.
Air
Air quality is on average better than in the rest of the North: Trieste benefits from the winds, while the Pordenone and Udine plain records fewer winter PM10 exceedances than the central Po basin. ARPA FVG publishes data and forecasts; winter anti-smog measures mainly concern the municipalities of the western plain.
