Organisation
The regional health system, largely self-funded thanks to the special statute, is organised in three authorities: the Giuliano Isontina University Health Authority (ASUGI, Trieste and Gorizia-Monfalcone), the Friuli Centrale University Health Authority (ASUFC, Udine and all central and mountain Friuli) and the Friuli Occidentale Health Authority (ASFO, Pordenone). Added to these are the Burlo Garofolo maternal and child research hospital in Trieste, the Aviano Oncology Reference Centre and the Regional Health Coordination Agency (ARCS), which manages procurement, the booking centre and IT systems.
Booking, health record, co-payments
Bookings go through the single regional booking centre (call centre, desks, pharmacies and online) and the Region's online health services portal, where SPID/CIE give access to the Electronic Health Record, reports, GP change and co-payment. The Region has set its own co-payment exemptions beyond national ones and abolished some fixed prescription charges: rules should be checked each year on the regional site.
Mountains and caves
In the mountains and on the Karst, rescue is provided by the FVG National Alpine and Cave Rescue Corps with the regional helicopter (based at Campoformido): call 112. The Trieste Karst is one of the most visited caving areas in Europe and has specialised cave rescue teams.
