Climate and hazards

Mild Mediterranean climate on the coast, with winters among the gentlest in northern Italy; intense short autumn rains cause flash floods (Genoa 2011 and 2014, Cinque Terre 2011). Colour-coded Allerta Liguria warning system. Low seismicity, slightly higher around Imperia. Good air.

Climate

The Ligurian coast has mild winters (the western and eastern Rivieras are the warmest areas in northern Italy, with palms, agaves and lemon trees) and hot summers cooled by sea breezes; humidity is high. The Apennine hinterland and Ligurian Alps have cold winters with snow above 1,000 metres (small resorts at Monesi and Santo Stefano d'Aveto). The sea is swimmable from June to September; Genoa suffers strong winds (tramontana, libeccio) that stop the ferries.

Floods and seismicity

The most serious hazard is the flash flood: torrents drop in a few kilometres from the mountains to the sea and autumn rains, concentrated in a few hours, caused the Genoa floods (1970, 2011, 2014), the Cinque Terre and Val di Vara floods (October 2011) and frequent landslides on coastal roads. The Region runs a colour-coded alert system (green, yellow, orange, red) published on Allerta Liguria: under a red alert schools close and municipalities suspend activities. Seismic risk is low (zones 3 and 4), slightly higher in the far west (Diano Marina earthquake of 1887).

Air

Air quality is good compared with the Po plain thanks to the winds; local problems are ship emissions in the ports of Genoa, Savona and La Spezia and traffic on the coastal motorways. ARPAL publishes monitoring station data and weather bulletins.
