Statute and languages
Liguria is an ordinary-statute region with only four provinces, Genoa's having become a Metropolitan City in 2015. The official language is Italian; Genoese (zeneise) and the Ligurian varieties are living dialects, mainly among the elderly and in traditional singing (trallalero), but are not protected by law 482/1999. The same law does recognise Occitan in Olivetta San Michele and in the Brigasque hamlets of Triora (Realdo, Verdeggia), on the French border.
Holidays
24 June, St John the Baptist, is the patron saint's day in Genoa (municipal offices closed); 19 March in La Spezia, 26 November (St Leonard of Port Maurice) in Imperia. Events: Sanremo Festival (February), Euroflora in Genoa (held every few years: the latest in 2025, the next announced for 2028), Palio del Golfo in La Spezia (first Sunday of August), Genoa Boat Show (September).
