UNESCO sites and parks

UNESCO sites: Genoa, the Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli (2006), opened to the public during the spring and autumn Rolli Days; Portovenere, Cinque Terre and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto (1997). Parks: Cinque Terre National Park, regional parks of Portofino, Ligurian Alps, Beigua (UNESCO geopark), Aveto, Antola and Montemarcello-Magra; Portofino and Cinque Terre marine protected areas; the Cetacean Sanctuary offshore.

Cinque Terre and rules

The Cinque Terre receive millions of visitors a year, concentrated between April and October, in villages with a few thousand residents: the Park runs the Cinque Terre Card (unlimited train and access to the paid trails), imposes one-way flow and access limits on the Monterosso–Vernazza trail on peak days and bans flip-flops on the paths. The Via dell'Amore (Riomaggiore–Manarola), reopened in 2024 after twelve years, is walked one way with a timed ticket bought online. Portofino and Camogli restrict traffic and parking in high season.

Seasons and tax

The western Riviera (Alassio, Sanremo, Finale, Varigotti) works from Easter to September and in winter for the mild climate; Genoa draws urban and cruise tourism all year (Aquarium, historic centre). The Ligurian Alps and the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri are the destinations for trekking and mountain biking. The tourist tax is municipal: Genoa, the Cinque Terre, Portofino, Sanremo and most beach resorts apply it.
