Sectors
Genoa concentrates the port and logistics (the Genoa–Savona–Vado system is one of Italy's main ones for containers and ro-ro traffic), shipbuilding and defence (Sestri Ponente, Riva Trigoso, Muggiano in La Spezia), high tech and research (Erzelli science park, Italian Institute of Technology), health care (San Martino Polyclinic, Gaslini) and public administration. La Spezia has the naval arsenal, container port and yachting; Savona the port, energy and ceramics. Liguria's employment rate is below that of the other northern regions and the active population is shrinking.
Seasonal and border work
Tourism is the big seasonal employer: hotels, beach clubs, catering and yachting hire from Easter to September along the whole coast, with peaks in the Cinque Terre, Portofino, Alassio and Sanremo; cruise traffic in Genoa, Savona and La Spezia generates work almost all year. In the west, flower growing (Sanremo, Albenga plain) and olive growing (Imperia) employ seasonal workers. The French border (Ventimiglia–Menton) sees commuters to the Côte d'Azur and Monaco, mainly in services.
Employment services
Job centres are run by ALFA Liguria (Regional agency for labour, training and accreditation), which publishes vacancies, training calls and GOL measures. The port has its own labour placement system (Compagnia Unica of port workers in Genoa) with special rules.
