Rail

The Bologna–Lecce Adriatic railway runs along the whole coast with Frecciarossa and Intercity stops at Pesaro, Ancona and San Benedetto del Tronto, plus Trenitalia regional trains to Fano, Senigallia, Civitanova and Porto San Giorgio. The connection to Rome uses the Orte–Falconara line through Fabriano and Jesi: largely single-track, with journey times of about three and a half to four hours from Ancona; RFI is doubling some sections. Inland, the Civitanova–Macerata–Albacina line also serves Tolentino, San Severino Marche, Castelraimondo and Matelica; the inland Fermo area has no railway and relies on intercity buses and cars.

Port and airport

The port of Ancona, run by the Central Adriatic Port System Authority, is the main passenger port of the central Adriatic: scheduled ferries to Split and Zadar (Croatia), Igoumenitsa and Patras (Greece) and Durrës (Albania), with much higher frequencies in summer. The same authority manages the ports of Pesaro, Pescara and Ortona. The Marche airport at Falconara Marittima (Raffaello Sanzio) has scheduled and low-cost flights to some Italian and European destinations; for long-haul travel people use Bologna or Rome Fiumicino.

Roads and local transport

The A14 motorway follows the coast from Pesaro to San Benedetto; the interior is linked by the SS76 (Vallesina, towards Fabriano and Perugia) and SS77 (Val di Chienti, towards Foligno) expressways, completed under the Quadrilatero Marche-Umbria project. In the valleys and on the Sibillini public transport is limited to a few bus runs a day: anyone moving to an inland village must plan on having a car. The provincial capitals have small urban bus networks.
