Climate and hazards

Alpine climate with mild dry valley floors (Bolzano is among the hottest northern cities in summer), snow at altitude from December to April. Hazards: avalanches, landslides, windstorms (Vaia 2018), floods. Low seismicity; good air except winter inversions and A22 traffic.

Sections: Seasons · Rainfall · Temperatures · Air quality · Environmental hazards

Climate

The Adige valley floor has hot summers (Bolzano often records the highest temperatures in northern Italy) and cold but sunny winters with little fog; Merano enjoys a mild microclimate that made it a spa town. The Trentino shore of Lake Garda has an almost Mediterranean climate with regular winds (Ora and Pelér). At altitude, snow covers the Dolomite resorts (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, Madonna di Campiglio, San Martino di Castrozza) normally from early December to Easter, with widespread artificial snowmaking.

Natural hazards

The hazards are Alpine ones: avalanches (provincial bulletins from December to May), landslides and debris flows, floods in side torrents. Storm Vaia in October 2018 felled millions of trees in Val di Fiemme, Val di Fassa and eastern South Tyrol, and the damaged forests were then attacked by the bark beetle. Seismic risk is low: almost all municipalities fall in zone 4, some in southern Trentino in zone 3.

Air

Air quality is good compared with the Po plain; local problems are winter thermal inversions in the Bolzano and Trento basins and nitrogen oxides along the Brenner motorway (A22), one of the busiest heavy-traffic corridors in the Alps, monitored by the provincial environment agencies (APPA Trento, Provincial Agency for the Environment in Bolzano).
