Nature and towns
The Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage natural serial site since 2009, in nine systems spread across Trentino, South Tyrol, Veneto and Friuli; the Fondazione Dolomiti UNESCO coordinates management. In the region: Stelvio National Park (shared with Lombardy), Adamello-Brenta Nature Park (brown bear, Brenta Dolomites), Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino, the South Tyrolean nature parks (Sciliar-Catinaccio, Puez-Odle, Fanes-Senes-Braies with Lake Braies, Tre Cime). Smaller art towns: Trento (Buonconsiglio Castle, MUSE), Bolzano (Archaeological Museum with Ötzi), Merano, Bressanone, Rovereto (MART).
Seasons
Winter (December–April): Dolomiti Superski joins twelve ski areas (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, Plan de Corones, Tre Valli, San Martino and others) under one ski pass; Madonna di Campiglio and Folgarida-Marilleva in Trentino. Summer (June–September): trekking, mountain huts, Alpine lakes, the Trentino shore of Garda for sailing and climbing at Arco. Val di Fiemme (Predazzo, Tesero) and Anterselva hosted the ski jumping, cross-country, Nordic combined and biathlon events of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Christmas markets (late November–6 January) and the Merano spa extend the season.
Rules
The tourist tax is compulsory in all South Tyrol municipalities (municipal tourist tax) and in Trentino (provincial tourist tax), with rates by accommodation category. Some much-photographed places (Lake Braies, Seceda, Alpe di Siusi, the Dolomite passes) have capped access or bookable car parks in high season; the rules are municipal and provincial and should be checked before travelling.
