In town
The centre is pedestrian and crossed on foot; the cycle path along the Dora Baltea links the districts from east to west and is the axis most used by cyclists. Urban transport is run by SVAP (Società Valdostana Autoservizi Pubblici) with numbered lines joining the centre to the quarters, the hillside hamlets and the ring municipalities (Saint-Christophe, Charvensod, Gressan, Sarre, Quart), an on-demand night service (Allô Nuit) and an app for timetables and tickets. Regional lines to the valleys leave from the bus station next to the railway station.
The Aosta–Pila gondola lift departs from the station area and reaches the Pila ski resort (1,800 m) in about twenty minutes: skiers use it in winter, hikers and mountain bikers in summer.
Train, car, airports
Aosta station is the terminus of the non-electrified line to Ivrea, Chivasso and Turin. Between Aosta and Ivrea the line has been closed since 15 December 2024 for electrification works and the service is run with replacement buses; RFI gives 12 June 2027, a date still to be confirmed, as the end of the closure. Before planning a commute, check timetables and replacements on the Trenitalia website. The Aosta–Pré-Saint-Didier stretch towards Courmayeur has been suspended for years. Coaches link Aosta to Turin, Milan, Courmayeur and Chamonix.
The A5 Turin–Aosta motorway continues to the Mont Blanc tunnel (France); the Great St Bernard pass and tunnel lead to Switzerland. The centre is a ZTL: park in the ring car parks (Piazza Plouves, station, Parini, Carrel) and in blue-line spaces; in the hamlets parking is free.
There is no commercial airport: the Corrado Gex airfield at Saint-Christophe serves only general aviation and air rescue. The reference airports are Turin Caselle (about an hour and a half by car), Milan Malpensa and Geneva, through the Mont Blanc tunnel.
