Overview

What kind of city

Barletta is a coastal municipality in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, with a hospital and an employment centre. The regional guide describes the historic centre around the Colossus, a 4.5-metre bronze on corso Vittorio Emanuele, the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and the Duomo (co-cathedral basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore), with a 12th-century Romanesque front and a 14th-century Gothic rear.

Castle and history

The Comune describes the castle as a fortress with a sixteenth-century appearance whose origin cannot be dated precisely; the regional guide notes that its first floor houses the Museo Civico and Galleria. Barletta is tied to the Disfida (Challenge), the duel between thirteen French and thirteen Italian knights on 13 February 1503, won by the Italians led by Ettore Fieramosca; the municipal site shows the Disfida programme and the archaeological area of Canne della Battaglia.

The sea

According to the regional guide the coast stretches for over 10 km and is divided by the port into the Levante beaches, with many equipped lidos, and the Ponente beaches, with more free areas, popular for surfing and kitesurfing. The seafront is named after Pietro Mennea.
