Getting around: urban buses, slow trains, the car for the rest
Campobasso has an urban bus network run on behalf of the Comune (SEAC), a railway station with regional trains to Termoli, Isernia, Rome and Naples, and regional and long-distance coach lines. It has no airport: the nearest are Naples, Pescara and Rome. To move around Molise a car is necessary.

The urban network
Urban transport is by bus: the lines run on behalf of the Comune (operator SEAC) link the centre with the districts, the university at Vazzieri, the Cardarelli hospital at Tappino, the station and the commercial zones, with adequate frequencies on weekdays and reduced ones in the evening and on holidays. The Murat centre and the old town are walkable; the climb to the castle is noticeable. The regional coach terminal is near the railway station.
Tickets
Urban tickets are bought at authorised outlets and on board; monthly and annual passes exist with student reductions. Updated fares are published by the Comune and the operator and in the data below.

Trains, long-distance coaches, airports
Campobasso station is on the line to Termoli (about an hour and a half to the coast and the Adriatic line) and on the line to Isernia, Venafro and Vairano, which leads to Rome and Naples with regional trains and changes: times to Rome exceed three hours and to Naples two and a half, except for seasonal or daily direct services to be checked on Trenitalia. Coaches are more used: regional and national lines link Campobasso to Roma Tiburtina, Naples and Pescara in two to three hours, as well as to Termoli and Isernia.
There is no airport in Molise: the nearest are Naples Capodichino (about two and a half hours), Pescara (about two hours) and Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino (about three hours). Termoli, an hour away, is the port for the Tremiti islands.
ZTL and cars
The centre has pedestrian areas (part of corso Vittorio Emanuele, piazza Prefettura) and a ZTL in the old town with regulated access; parking is paid in the central streets and free in most districts, with car parks near the centre. A car is necessary for much of regional life: Termoli and the sea, Isernia, the Matese, the industrial zones; in winter, winter tyres or chains on board are needed, compulsory on the area's roads in the cold months.
