Transport: bikes, the walls, new cycle paths, ZTL and parking permits
Ferrara is explored on foot and by bike: the ring of the walls is about 9 km and cycle routes link the city to Ravenna, Bologna, Padua, Verona and Mantua and to the Po. The Ferrara–Boara cycle path opened in 2026. ZTL and parking permits are requested online or at the Single Permit Office; for public transport the municipality refers to TPER.

Bikes
The ring of the Este walls, about 9 km, takes an hour and a half by bike, along the grassy moat or on the tree-lined rampart. Cycle-touring routes are graded by difficulty (up to 20 km, 20 to 50 km, over 50 km) and link Ferrara with Ravenna, Bologna, Padua, Verona and Mantua along the Garda–Adriatic route; the Destra Po route follows the river. On 12 October 2026 the via Copparo cycle path linking Ferrara to Boara was opened.
Cars, permits and public transport
Permits to drive in the ZTL (residents, people domiciled there, shopkeepers, craftsmen, daily and season permits) and to park in the controlled parking zones (ZSC) are issued by the Single Permit Office (Centro Unico Permessi) at via Marconi 41, open Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 12:00 without appointment; since 2021 requests can also be made online on the INES Cloud portal. For public transport the municipal website refers to TPER. The city has obtained almost 15 million euros from the Ministry of the Environment for the PRIMA project on sustainable mobility and public transport.
From 1 October to 31 March the anti-smog restrictions for the most polluting vehicles apply in the built-up area.
