Temperatures and seasons
Genoa has a Mediterranean climate sheltered to the north by the Apennines: January is among the mildest of the northern capitals, snow in the city is rare and summers are hot but seldom muggy thanks to the sea breeze. The high humidity with overcast skies and still air typical of spring and autumn has a local name: maccaja. The tramontana wind, by contrast, brings cold, crystal-clear winter days.
Rain, floods and alerts
The Ligurian coast receives heavy rain in a few hours, especially between September and November, when self-regenerating storms stall over the valleys: the Bisagno floods of 1970, 2011 and 2014 are part of the city's memory. Regione Liguria and ARPAL run the Allerta Liguria system with yellow, orange and red levels by zone; under a red alert, and often an orange one, the municipality closes schools, parks, cemeteries and underpasses and asks people not to travel. Newcomers should install the app or follow official channels and know their neighbourhood's civil protection plan, especially along the streams and on ground floors.
Air quality
Wind and sea keep pollutants low: exceedances of the daily PM10 limit are few, among the lowest of Italy's large cities. The critical points are the industrial and port areas of Ponente (Cornigliano, Sampierdarena) and valley traffic, monitored by ARPAL.
