Sea economy
According to the 2026 report of the Maremma and Tirreno Chamber of Commerce, Livorno is a province "always strongly tied to the sea": it ranks second in Italy for the share of value added produced by the sea economy and first for the share of employment. Logistics (moving goods and passengers by sea) generates the most value added, while accommodation and catering lead in number of firms and workers; sport and recreation and shipbuilding follow.
In recent years fishing and shipbuilding firms have been declining, though shipbuilding employment is rising; the value added of logistics has grown.
Port and industry
The port is a multipurpose hub handling containers, ro-ro cargo, new cars, forest products, bulk, ferries and cruises, run by the North Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority. The province hosts industrial plants with state-level integrated environmental authorisation, including the ENI refinery and chemical works.
