Livorno

A port city on the Tuscan coast that grew under the Medici, who drew merchants from all over the world: the Venezia quarter on its canals, Medici fortresses, a seafront running to the cliffs of Calafuria. The sea economy weighs far more than the Italian average, between port, logistics and tourism; home of the Naval Academy.

Overview

A port city

Livorno developed around its port by the will of the Medici grand dukes, who abolished customs duties and adopted inclusive policies that drew merchants from all over the world. Their legacy includes the Fortezza Vecchia and Fortezza Nuova, the Four Moors monument facing the old dock, and the Venezia Nuova, a seventeenth-century merchant quarter built on the water and crossed by canals (the Fossi).

The port, run by the North Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority, is a multipurpose port of the European TEN-T network: containers, ro-ro cargo, new cars, forest products, bulk, ferries and cruises.

Who lives here

According to the Maremma and Tirreno Chamber of Commerce, in the province of Livorno the sea economy (logistics, shipbuilding, accommodation and catering, sport and fishing) weighs much more than the national average in value added and employment. The city hosts the Italian Navy's Naval Academy and a University of Pisa campus devoted to logistics.

South of the centre the seafront runs past the Terrazza Mascagni and Antignano to the cliffs of the Calafuria reserve and Quercianella.

Livorno's ARPAT stations stay well within the limits for PM10 and nitrogen dioxide; bathing waters on the Livorno coast were almost always compliant in 2024. The risk to remember is intense rain: on 9 and 10 September 2017 a flood hit Livorno, Rosignano and Collesalvetti.
